How Meditation Helps you to Stress Less, and Accomplish More

Guest Post By Emily Fletcher, founder of zivaMIND

Meditation is certainly having its day in the sun. It seems like everyone is talking about it, and for good reason!

When I tell people I am a meditation teacher they often say, “cooking is my meditation”, or “exercise is my meditation”. And while those things are relaxing, I would offer that meditation is its own thing, which is why it has its own word.

Meditation is quite simply a stress-relieving tool. One of the styles of meditation I teach at Ziva is a tool to help you access a verifiable fourth state of consciousness. During waking, sleeping, and dreaming (the three states of consciousness we are all very familiar with) the right and left sides to function independently of each other. In this style of meditation, the right and left brains are functioning in unison.

Why should you care?

Your right brain is the home of intuition, creativity, and the right now (also where bliss and fulfillment hang out). Your left brain is worrying about the past and rehearsing the future- where most of our stress happens to hang out.

This style of meditation grounds us so strongly in the right now that we are able to experience joy and bliss while performing at the top of our game. Meditators report a large array of improvements in their lives, from promotions at work to insomnia that disappears without a trace. The common factor? Less stress.

If you don’t yet have a meditation practice, consider trying this simple but powerful breathing technique you can use the next time you feel like you are at your breaking point.

Simply stop, take a breath, then walk around your office or room inhaling for 4 steps and exhaling for 6 steps. So simple, but it helps to cool off, oxygenate the blood and calm the vagus nerve which connects your brain to your body. This gets you out of fight-or-flight stress reaction and into stay-and-play.

If you dig this and want to develop an easy meditation practice you will look forward to, I would love for you to join me for an 8 day, online training here.
