Robert Thurman, American Buddhist Writer, on Loving Your Enemy

In this Big Think clip, Robert Thurman, American Buddhist author and academic, discusses Buddha and Jesus’s maxim of “love your enemy” in the context of the modern world. In the modern Western world, people get nervous about the idea of love your enemy, Thurman claims, because if you love your enemy you are inviting them to destroy you. Thurman says those who think that way are confused about what “love your enemy” really means; in Asian psychological terms “love” means wishing happiness upon our beloved. Thurman argues that we can be opposed to someone and still love them. He also says we are more likely to get through to those we are opposed to if they don’t sense any hatred coming from us.
