What is Mindfulness?

In this Psych Alive video, Jon Kabat-Zinn claims that mindfulness is “paying attention as if you’re life depended on it.” Kabat-Zinn thinks your life does depend on your attention because if we aren’t attentive to the present moment (the only moment where we are alive), we miss out on life. He observes that when people start to pay attention, they “begin to notice the mind is all over the place.” Mindfulness, he argues, “gives us a wiser relationship to things that are going on in our lives, rather than being at the mercy of crazy thoughts, fears, etc.”

He concludes with a call to action. Why not develop our capacity for awareness? Why not expand the freedom of our body, heart, and mind, by becoming more mindful?
